China is considered the birthplace of peonies, where this flower personified a symbol of health, prosperity and power. However, until relatively recently, the attitude towards peonies in Ukraine was quite cool.

It was customary to give a bouquet of peonies to a teacher for the last bell or to congratulate veterans. However, over time, with the advent of Western culture and traditions, as well as the opportunity to give peonies almost all year round, the popularity of peonies has increased significantly and it has moved from the ranks of a flower that grows in my grandmother’s flowerbed to the league of elite flowers. Thus, regaining the laurels of the flower, which symbolizes prosperity, health and well-being.

Now a bouquet of peonies is not only a desirable gift for a girl, but also an indicator of status and a manifestation of the high feelings of the giver.

Traditionally, the season of local peonies is considered to be from mid-May to early June and lasts 3-4 weeks depending on weather conditions.

Among imported peonies, there are such producing countries as: Italy, France, the Netherlands, Israel and Chile. Therefore, depending on the country of origin of peonies, the seasonality of imported peonies, as well as its cost, varies.

In the spring at the end of March, the earliest peony appears in Italy and Israel, this is due to the earlier onset of suitable climatic conditions in these countries. At the beginning of April, they are joined by peonies grown in France, and then in the Netherlands. However, despite the difference in climatic zones, the peak flowering of imported peonies still occurs in May-June.

Then, for a short time, peonies find peace and begin to bloom again from late August to October, but during this period their varietal diversity is much less than in spring. At the end of November to January, peonies from Chile arrive on the flower market around the world. During this period, peonies of delicate pink and pale pink colors predominate.

However, sophisticated lovers of peony bouquets will ask the question: “why, despite the seasonality, can you buy peonies almost all year round?” The answer to this question is very simple - modern technologies allow you to freeze cut peonies for a certain period of time and this has practically no effect on the quality of the flower itself.

The lifespan of peonies, like most flowers, is influenced by 3 main factors:

1. Amount of water in the vase
2. Ambient temperature
3. The time period from the moment of collecting the bouquet to placing the flowers in the vase.

It’s sad to say this, but very often recipients neglect to follow step 1 and unintentionally shorten the life of a bouquet of flowers in a vase.

Peonies are one of the many flowers that require a lot of water in the vase. After all, they need to nourish the dense stem, wide green leaves and luxurious fluffy bud. With a small amount of water, this will simply be impossible.

How to determine how much water to pour into a peony? Until the first leaves, so that the water in the vase is slightly below their level. Keeping the room temperature moderate will also extend the life of your peony bouquet. Peonies, like any other flower, do not like too hot temperatures, as they increase the evaporation of moisture and this leads to the death of the flower. The flow of cold air from the air conditioner is also harmful to flowers, as is placing peonies near a window. After all, a sharp change in temperature, especially in winter or during the hot season, will undoubtedly harm your bouquet. Therefore, in order to preserve your bouquet with peonies for as long as possible, we recommend placing it in the center of the room or in places where the temperature is most comfortable and stable.

When discussing the basic points that affect the lifespan of a bouquet, you need to pay special attention to the issue of time during which your bouquet of peonies will be without water. Peonies easily tolerate the lack of moisture, so they can be easily used in wedding bouquets, but we should not forget that before placing the bouquet in a vase, peonies should be cut with a sharp knife at an angle of 45 degrees, thereby increasing the area of water absorption by the flower.

But what should you do if you notice that your bouquet of peonies has begun to lose its freshness?

1. Cut your bouquet again, but this time shorten the stems of the bouquet by 5-7 cm, thereby shortening the path of water delivery to the bud.
2. Peonies are a very moisture-loving plant, so take a spray bottle, spray the leaves and stems (without affecting the bud), wrap in film or craft and place in cold water for 1 day.
3. Add a sachet of professional cut flower care product to the water. Monitor the water level in the vase and the purity of the water!

We do not recommend immersing flowers completely in water to resuscitate peonies, as water entering the bud leads to its rotting
